SpaceX has successfully launched another top-secret payload into space for the U.S. Space Force, sending a Falcon 9 rocket soaring into the evening sky over California.
Key Mission Highlights
- Launch Location: Vandenberg Space Force Base, California.
- Launch Time: October 15, at 5:01 p.m. local time (8:01 p.m. EDT / 0001 GMT Oct. 16).
- Weather Conditions: Unusually clear skies over Vandenberg—a rare treat for spectators, as the coastal base is frequently covered in dense fog.
- The Mission (USSF-481): A highly classified operation delivering mysterious payloads to an undisclosed orbit in space.
Booster B1081 Sets Another Reusability Record
The launch featured one of SpaceX’s most seasoned workplace heroes—Falcon 9 first-stage booster B1081:
- 28th Flight: This mission marked the 28th launch and landing for this single booster.
- Starlink Workhorse: 16 of its previous 27 missions were dedicated to deploying SpaceX’s Starlink internet satellites.
- Flawless Landing: Approximately 8.5 minutes after liftoff, the booster returned to Earth, landing smoothly on the autonomous drone ship “Of Course I Still Love You” floating in the Pacific Ocean.
A Busy Year for SpaceX
SpaceX continues its relentless launch tempo:
- 114th Falcon 9 Flight of the Year: The vast majority (over 70%) of this year’s missions have been dedicated to expanding the Starlink constellation.
- Heavy-Lifters & Next-Gen Rockets: In addition to Falcon 9, SpaceX has launched its powerful Falcon Heavy and massive Starship rockets three times each.
- Starship Milestone: Starship, which is still undergoing testing, successfully reached orbit for the first time during its most recent flight.
